CHD Awareness Week

While many people are aware that February is Heart Month and that February 14th is Valentine’s Day, a day full of love and heart shaped memorabilia, most people are not aware of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Awareness Week.

February 7 - 14 is Congenital Heart Defects/Disease Awareness Week

My Heart Wall was created with the mission to raise awareness and support of children born with heart defects. It continues to shock us how many people are not aware of CHDs even with the staggering amount of babies born with them every day.

Did you know that 1 in approximately 100 births are CHD babies? That’s 1 baby every 15 minutes. And a quarter of all of these babies will require at least one heart surgery to survive.

CHD is the world’s most common birth defect, being 60 times more prevalent than childhood cancer.

Due to life-saving research developments, today 37% more babies born with CHDs live into adulthood. While this is great, this requires more research into the development of these children into adults and how to continue to care for their condition. CHD research is grossly underfunded. We hope that this week, you can spare some of your time to help spread awareness of this highly prevalent disease with unfortunately low awareness in the general public.

At the end of this post are some materials you can use to learn more about CHDs and that we encourage you to share via social media.

Overall, this week is about a variety of feelings. We celebrate our heart warriors who persist in their journey. We fondly remember the heart angels whose journey has unfortunately been cut short, but whose memories live on forever. And especially, with this week, we remember to appreciate that every day is a gift.
